Ras Aseyr's Telecommunications Cut Off
Rift Between New State and Puntland Authority Likely To Blame
By MOHAMED SHIIL 05/07/2011
Initial reports from Ras Aseyr town, in the semi-autonomous region of Puntland, indicate that telecommunication access has been cut off.

Sources in Bargal town told Somalia Report that since the early morning the telecommunication was cut off.

“Nobody knows the reason but it is obviously believed that this comes after an escalating rift erupted between Puntland Authority and the newly founded Ras Aseyr State,” said a resident in Bargal who spoke to our correspondent on the condition of anonymity.

Telecommunication officials, including those of Golis Telecommunication, declined comment to Somalia Report.

This action coincides with the President of Ras Aseyr State's visit to Bargal and his meetings with local elders who support the new regional state.

Puntland does not welcome the newly formed state and sources close to Puntland authority said that Puntland President Farole is distrustful of their objectives.

Unconfirmed reports indicate that Puntland plans to economically and politically squeeze Ras Aseyr, however Puntland officials were unavailable to comment on the allegation.

Ras Aseyr has put its forces on high alert amid unofficial reports that Punland plans to launch an attack on Ras Aseyr town.
