Unidentified gunmen stormed the Galkayo offices of Golis Telecom, the biggest telecommunication company in Somalia's semi-autonomous region of Puntland, on Thursday afternoon robbing large quantities of money and wounding one of the company employees, according to witnesses.
Mohamed Omar, an engineer with Golis, confirmed the incident to Somalia Report.
“About six or eight unidentified gunmen attacked company offices with guns in the south of the city and took a lot money,” he said. ”I do not how much was taken because we are in the middle of counting what is left in our safe.”
He said the robbers escaped the scene before security forces arrived.
The General Manager of Golis also confirmed the incident in a phone interview with Somalia Report.
“I am in Oman now. I heard about the event and still I am collecting the information about how this is happened. I heard that a sum of money was stolen, but we don't know exactly how much yet. We are investigating and we will make a statement about this soon,” said General Manager Aadan Shiekh Doon.
Other sources reported that between $60,000 to $100,000 was stolen.
Local journalist Abdulkadir Jimale told Somalia Report that local residents aid the robbers belong Sa’ad sub clan of Galmudug state, however, this is unconfirmed.
